I'd forgotten how much I loved Something Corporate and how effective they are at getting me through some truly awful times. Like now.

Thanks Josh.

Books?

Jun. 22nd, 2013 09:45 pm
meimichan: (Default)
Officially filing for divorce.

How about a book survey instead? That's more fun.

Day 1- A book you are reading right now
Little Girls in Pretty Boxes

Day 2 - The book you want to read next
I've got a bit of a pile going on a bookshelf. I picked up Beka Cooper by Tamora Pierce used at Goodwill the other day, maybe that one?

Day 3 - Your favourite book
Oh wow.....Magician by Raymond E. Feist is possibly my favorite book. Either that or The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

Day 4 - Book you hate
50 Shades of Grey is by far the worst book I have ever read in my life. A Tale of Two Cities held that honor for close to twelve years too.

Day 5 - A Book you can read again and again
I think I re-read The Belgariad/The Mallorean more than any other series. Easy, silly, decent story.

Day 6 - A book you can only read once (no matter you love or hate it)
Life of Pi. Phenomenal book, but I don't think it's one I would ever be able to read again.

Day 7 - Book that reminds you of someone
Magician and The Lord of the Rings remind me of my dad-he and I are both into fantasy.

Day 8 - Book that reminds you of a certain place
Drawing a blank on this one...I suppose Superpowers reminds me of Madison, what with it taking place here and the university and square being mentioned often?

Day 9 - The first book you ever read
A picture book involving witches. Also I was 4. I could read in pre-school and kindergarten.

Day 10 - Book from your favourite author
*tries to think of a favorite author*

Day 11 - Book you once loved and now hate
The Babysitter's Club series? Well it's more I see how utterly ridiculous the entire thing and characters are now that I'm older and thankfully, LJ gave me [community profile] bsc_snark for this.

Day 12 - Book that a friend recommended
A friend in college recommended Ken Follett's books to me.

Day 13 - Book that makes you laugh
Good Omens. I had to keep taking breaks I was cracking up so much.

Day 14 - Book from your childhood
A Wrinkle in Time.

Day 15 - 4th book from the left on your shelf
I have three bookcases. Oh fine. The Black Gryphon by Mercedes Lackey. Bookcase most to my left.

Day 16 - 9th book from the right on your shelf
New York City Pocket Guide. Bookcase most to my right.

Day 17 - Close your eyes and get any book from your shelf
I'll go for the middle bookcase here, how's that? The Little Paris Kitchen.

Day 18 - Book with the most beautiful cover
I am not going through all my books to narrow this one down, all right? Some are still in my fricking garage.

I'll go with Understanding Exposure.

Day 19 - Book that you never wanted to read
Plenty from school qualify, but I did end up reading 50 Shades of Grey on a dare. BLECH. It's a miracle I finished it. I've killed less brain cells binging on tequila.

Day 20 - Book that you read at school
I read plenty of books at school. I'll go with Pride and Prejudice, mostly cause I liked that one.

Day 21 - Most stupid book you read at school
Tale of Two Cities was the only book I ever read at school that I had to cliff-note my way through because I just couldn't make myself read it anymore. And I read plenty of stupid books at school. The Pearl was another terrible one.

Day 22 - Book on your shelf with the most pages
I think To Green Angel Tower is going to take the prize on that one. I need to finish that series one of these days.

Day 23 - Book on your shelf with the least pages
Bunnicula? I'll go with that. Again, three bookcases, not all my books are unpacked yet, not really that interested in sussing it out that thoroughly.

Day 24 - Book that nobody would expect you read/loved it
Hmm...I read damn near anything...possibly some of Ken Follett's stuff? He tells a good story, but in some cases his writing style can murder the enjoyment of it. His writing can be a bit too crass and not really flow that well at times. Still, The Pillars of the Earth is one of my favorite books of all time.

Day 25 - A book where the main character is almost like you
I'm not sure on this one...I don't really have my entire collection up here so hard to glance around and see. It's been commented on that the main character in the movie 10 Things I Hate About You is like me though, if that gives you some idea?

Hermione and I have a few things in common too. Well, more accurate to say, I was a lot like Hermione when I was Hermione's age. Smart kid in school, still a booklover, made really high grades, etc. Do adore her.

Day 26 - Book you would read to your children
I have no children and never really intend to. My cat doesn't really care if I read to her or not. Maybe a sushi cookbook featuring tuna would grab her attention?

Now I want sushi. I have a strong addiction.

Day 27 - A book where the main character is your idol
I don't think I've read any books where I genuinely idolize the main character.
Hermione from Harry Potter is awesome though, even if she's not the main character. Smart chicks for the win!

Day 28 - Thank God this book was made into a movie
Words you will not hear me say often, if ever, but I'll go with Twilight. I didn't care much for Twilight(and the three books after were worse), but the movie had something resembling a plot before the book did.

Also, I do really like The Lord of the Rings movie series. So pretty. So okay, we can go with that one too.

Day 29 - Darn, why did they make this book into a movie?
Harriet the Spy. And damn near the rest of them.

Day 30 - First erotic book you ever read
Not really into erotic books. I think the Stephanie Plum novels were the first ones I read that had sex scenes. 50 Shades of Grey doesn't count. That entire book was bullshit.

Day 31 - Book series you are collecting
None in particular. I just collect books. Makes moving a pain.

I have lost all hope that my husband still loves me.
meimichan: (Default)
I don't really know what the fuck's going on here anymore.

Jason and I are having problems.

I'm too numb to update or elaborate.
meimichan: (Default)
Work is a disaster.

My marriage isn't quite a disaster yet, but it's not going so great, and hasn't been for months.

My parents are a disaster.

LJ is so fucking dead I barely bother with posting anymore. Pretty much over on Twitter where I get instant reactions instead of having to watch for comments. Plus having checked my friends, barely anyone even posts here anymore. I'm pretty much watching a few communities at this point when I remember to check in.
meimichan: (Default)
For those who were not with me back in 2008, I did an epic LJ liveblog of election night. I'm not sure how well I'll be able to keep up tonight since time has passed and the internets have changed, I interact more with people on Twitter now.

Still...why not.

Races I'm watching in WI:
Senate, WI-District 1(this is where I live and yes this is Paul Ryan's congressional district. I loathe the little bastard), WI-Senate 14(a personal friend of mine is running for state senate there)

Other races:
IN, MA, and MO senate races, all the marriage equality bills.

So to start...I just got home from work.

Most states that have polls that have closed are too close to call. NH is for Obama, SC, IN, WV, KY are all for Romney. None of these are a surprise. Romney 33, Obama 3.

(watching Ohio's results with my heart in my throat)

Will update later with changes. I have a job this time around, but fuck it, I will Red Bull it tomorrow if I have to. As a political junkie, this is one of my big nights. =P

Plus I start making more mistakes the later it gets.

7:00pm CST:
Polls just closed in a fuckload of states. FL, IL, NH, PA, GA, NJ, MA, TN, MA, AL, CT, OK, MS, RI, DE, DC, ME, MO.

Romney takes GA, TN, AL, and OK. Obama takes IL, MA, ME, RI, CT, DE, and DC. Rest are too close or too early to call. Some of this is storm-related, and really hope people were able to vote in affected areas today.

Obama 64, Romney 82.

7:50 CST: I think Arkansas was called for Romney, but I was cooking dinner. I should really mix myself a bloody mary before all the 8pm CST poll closings (including WI) happen and I type a lot and go to Twitter jail. Obama 64 Romney 88. I think NJ was also projected for Obama but they're still counting votes.

Also, Cory Booker is the coolest mayor ever.

Polls closing at 8:00pm CST: MI, WI, MN, NY, ND, SD, NE, KS, TX, AZ, CO.

Elizabeth Warren is MA's new senator and there was much rejoicing in my Twitter feeds. Also, I happy-danced.

8:09 pm: Now that I'm done happy-dancing over MI doing me proud, MI, NY, NJ all officially called for Obama. ND, SD, NE, TX called for Romney. I think. Current rankings Obama 128 Romney 153. Waiting with all the baited breath on PA, VA, FL, and OH to get called.

8:20 pm CST: PA goes for Obama! FUCK YES. Obama 148 Romney 153

Rumor has it that Tammy Baldwin has won WI's senate seat. I've not seen a call on TV of this or an official source, but it's flying around and her opponent, while well-known, is an ASSHOLE. Debbie Stabenow has definitely kept her Senate seat in MI.

8:48 pm CST: WISCONSIN GOES FOR OBAMA! OH HELL YES! And the Romney-Ryan ticket lost all their home states. Being a Michigan native and a current Janesville WI resident....I can explain the reasons behind that if you'd like. (They are fucking NUTS) Obama 158 Romney 153

Also switched from stress eating birthday cake to stress drinking a bloody mary. Waiting for any of the big 3 swing states left to topple. If any of them goes for Obama, this is over.

Obama 162 Romney 153 Think they finalized NH and that one's now in Obama's total count. I blame the vodka at this point.

Polls closing at 10pn: NV, MT, UT, and IA.

My main twitter account is in Twitter jail. Dammit.

9:02 pm CST: NV and IA too early to call. UT and MT go for Romney. Obama 162, Romney 162.

9:48 pm CST: They are being damn cautious calling the big swing states left over. MN goes to Obama, MO, AZ and WY go to Romney. Obama 172, Romney 184.

I'm not going to sleep well at all tonight.
meimichan: (Default)
As much fun as I had doing a play-by-play of Election Night in 2008, I'm not sure I've got the readership to pull that off this year. Plus now Twitter exists.

Also, I've been invited to four parties. O_o Holy shit. Have I been hanging out with a lot of people up there in politics or what now?

Honestly, the one I'm most tempted by is the one at a friend's house in Maple Bluff that might well involve PJ's. My second choice is still possibly home with a bottle of vodka. We'll see.

Today was my birthday and I had a great evening out with a couple of friends. But I've also been awake forever and am now feeling 30 years old. It's all downhill from here, right? Or is it all over the hill? =P

Oh yeah. DON'T FORGET TO VOTE.
meimichan: (Default)
I had a post idea, but all it's going to do is piss people off and I'm getting the feeling that hardly anyone likes me much at the moment anyways. Which does make me wonder why I'm holding back...maybe I'm just too tired to give a shit at the moment.

Work's going well though.
meimichan: (Default)
Tomorrow's October 8th.

Exactly four years ago tomorrow, I was laid off from my last chemistry job. I start my new job at a pharmaceutical company as an Associate Scientist. Capitalized for emphasis.

Roughly three years ago Jason and I left our current respective homes(Michigan and Ohio) and came to Wisconsin, where the economy wasn't great, but it wasn't the absolute shit that it was in Ohio and still is in Michigan. Guess we didn't want to go too far in case things went to shit.

It's been a damn interesting three years, not even needing to include 2011 which quite possibly wins as most interesting year of my life.

I regret nothing. And I really hope this job works out and goes well.

Suppose I should make dinner. No clue what to do with that one, but I do have two CSA boxes of gleanings from today's clean out the fields of all edible food event.
meimichan: keep calm and drink wine, white text on red background. prefer red wine. (keep calm and drink wine)
I caught some disease involving a sore throat and possibly irritated sinuses. I only say possibly on that last one because I have had a bloody nose since July courtesy of fucking allergies(is it winter yet?), it's just been hurting a hell of a lot more since yesterday.

Fricking JOY.

My shift was shit-canned today and I'm only working one day next week(the joys of resigning your shitty retail job), pretty sure I have no plans this weekend, thank goodness.

We had to apply for another car loan. Now, in my head, all of me knows this needs to happen and happen fairly quickly and especially with my new job this won't even financially be a problem(my starting offer is what my husband currently makes after about 3 years at his current job, our income is about to fucking double here). I need to commute to Middleton and J needs his car to visit clients about 2 out of 5 days a week, but most of me is just going "Ah fuck not another car payment."

Current plans involve sitting in bed and navigating all this paperwork for my new job and stuff. Mostly today...involve sitting in bed. Calling maintenance to complain about the severe lack of hot water, have a watchful cat watch me, drink liquids or maybe ionized plasma if I get bored. There's also books. Currently reading Lies My Teacher Told Me and slowly becoming convinced that everyone who learned anything about USA history in a US school needs to read it now. It does at least say this book is for anyone who ever slept through history class and hell, that's usually about what I had planned for that class! Not like I learned a damn thing in those classes...still got A's though, handy.

It still hasn't sunk in that I start working as a scientist on October 8th. It just doesn't feel real yet.

PPD JUST HIRED ME!!!!!

HOLY SHIT!

I still really don't believe it. I had to have the recruiter repeat himself when he said he wanted to make me an offer. I've never heard those words before.

I start October 8th. Which is or very close to what would have been my four-year anniversary of being unemployed from my field.
I checked the archives, October 8th 2008 is indeed when I lost my last chemistry job.
meimichan: (Default)
*wakes up and spends half the night throwing up*

Okay, I've got a job interview in ten hours. This is really fucking inconvenient.

Not to mention painful and disgusting and I feel terrible.
meimichan: (Default)
Home from the northwoods and much as I want to just sleep for the rest of time, real life is being a pesky bastard.

Just caught up on LJ, bit sparse on the comments though.

Job interview Monday, back to work Tuesday and Thursday, more shit to get done, and after being more or less wet since it rained all over this past Thursday, just got soaked and freezing retrieving the laundry.

Hot bath time.

Oh we had a great time btw. =D I may post more details later. If nothing else, the semi-decent photos should be making FB at some point.
meimichan: (Default)
In Copper Falls camping until Saturday night. Hope the cat doesn't completely trash the place.

Currently packing. This would be going better if 1) I wasn't so zonked from allergy meds and 2) if the goddamn caffeine would ever kick in. We wanted to be on the road by 10:00am. So far that's looking VERY damn unlikely.

Ah well. See you Sunday.
meimichan: (Default)
I took a doorknob to the head yesterday. Tragic comedy accident, but it's kind of hurting a lot.

It's also making me VERY incredibly fucking tired. Which is apparently not a great sign. I mean I've also got the headache and recurrent nausea but neither of those is unusual.

So if I drop dead and never post again, you know what happened.

(seriously, I think I'm okay)
meimichan: WI in the shape of a fist, text "Fighting for WI" (Wisconsin)
Well, today's the day.

HOLD ME.

The polls are not on our side, but I'm REALLY hoping we pushed voter turnout high enough to overcome that. I couldn't really do much GOTV stuff myself due to lacking a car, lacking a heavy enough phone plan(plus I've gotten six calls and after living in Ohio, really, there is a line between being called enough to be informed and called enough to be irritated beyond all measure), and lacking a working throat. Still, I did what I could. My front window's decorated, my car's decorated, donated money, and I'm pretty sure I've been blocked by some people on FB by now. I'm getting positive responses to that too, so I suppose it goes both ways.

I took a printer to the nose and eye at work today, so I do need to ice and painkiller it up before I go to Madison for the night. I'm finishing this with the people I started with.

And there will be booze. We're gonna need it either way.

If you're interested in what happens tonight, I'll be tweeting from my phone until I get tossed in the twitter brig and/or my phone dies. @meimichan
